How To Free Up Storage Space On Android Without Deleting Important Files

Few smartphone notifications are more frustrating than seeing “Storage Space Running Out” pop up on your screen. Suddenly your phone starts slowing down, apps stop updating properly, and even taking a quick photo becomes a struggle.

The typical advice? Simply delete the pictures or uninstall the apps. It's a pathetic middle-of-the-road solution, however. You have so many memories captured in your photos, and you use those apps on a regular basis.

Thankfully, Android already includes several built-in tools that can help you recover a surprising amount of storage space without deleting your important photos, apps, or personal files. The following is a step-by-step explanation of how this is done.

Remove Hidden Application Caches (The Smart Way)

Temporary files such as thumbnails, images, and snippets of scripts are downloaded every time you use Instagram, listen to music on Spotify, or shop on a phone app. This is referred to as “cached data”. The intention is to aid applications to load faster, but after months of use, over time, these temporary files can quietly take up several gigabytes of storage.

Avoid downloading so-called "RAM cleaners," or any "Speed Booster" applications from the Play Store, since they tend to track a lot and consume battery life. Rather, clean it up in a native manner.

How to execute it:

Tap Settings > Apps > See all apps.
Click on Size to view a list to identify apps that are taking up too much room.
Tap on any heavy applications (such as TikTok, Chrome, or YouTube) and choose Storage & cache.
Tap Clear cache.

Note:

Be sure to tap Clear cache, and NOT Clear data. Clearing data will reset the app, lose your logins, your personal settings and your offline downloads. Clearing the cache just clears the temporary junk files but leaves your account fully logged in.

Auditing Offline Downloads attachments on any media app

A lot of us download movies, podcasts, and music playlists to play on the commute or when we are on a plane and forget about them. The offline downloads are totally contained within app sandboxes and will not be found by a normal gallery scanner.

Remove movies or episodes that you have watched:

To do this, go to the Library > Downloads tab on YouTube / Streaming Apps.
Spotify / YouTube Music:

It's time to check your downloaded albums! One good offline music playlist can consume up to 3GB - 5GB of space.
Google Maps:

Go to the profile menu and select Offline maps. Old or unused map areas can be stored on your phone without you realizing it, and each takes up hundreds of megabytes of space.
